Oral Yeast Infection
What is an oral yeast infection?
An oral yeast infection is a yeast infection that occurs in the mouth. These types of yeast infections are usually referred to as “thrush.”
What causes an oral yeast infection?
Most yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of fungi, or candida, in the body. If your white blood cell count is abnormally low it can also bring about a yeast infection. Taking antibiotics can cause a yeast infection, too, because antibiotics rid the body of all bacteria including beneficial bacteria your body needs.
What does an oral yeast infection look like?
An oral yeast infection usually looks like raised white or yellow curd like patches in the mouth. These patches may appear on the roof of the mouth, the tongue, or on the insides of the cheeks. They usually bleed when they are scratched off.
How can I prevent an oral yeast infection?
The best way to prevent an oral yeast infection is to make sure you are getting lots of good bacteria in your body. Eating yogurt is the best way to get good bacteria. Yogurt is full of live cultures. Try to eat at least one cup of yogurt every day to ensure that you are getting enough good bacteria into your system. It’s important to practice good hygiene as well. Be sure to wash your hands frequently and use mouthwash when brushing your teeth to prevent an oral thrush. Try to avoid eating very sugary food because sugar tends to feed the fungus. Garlic has many anti-fungal properties, so try to include more garlic in your diet.
What types of medicines are used to prevent an oral yeast infection?
Anti-fungal medications are commonly used to treat oral yeast infections. Things like Nystatin and Diflucan are often prescribed. Gentian violet is an over the counter remedy that is very effective for oral thrush. It works well in babies, too. It will cause the entire mouth to turn a purple color, but that can be easily washed off. There are also lots of natural remedies available at health food stores to treat oral thrush.
